A small refined native shrub; is the hardiest of hazelnuts. Serrated green foliage turns yellow in fall. Yellow catkins in spring are followed by bristly, beak shaped edible nuts with a distinctive beak-like husk. Fruit production can be sparse but have a sweet taste and are commonly used for fresh eating.
